Working Title: Ask For It.I’m looking for honest readers who are interested in Beta reading, a new erotic contemporary romance.
If you read a fair amount of contemporary romance (think Marie Force, Susan Mallery, Susan Andersen, Bella Andre) that’s definitely a plus for this particular position.
I’m also looking for NFL fans and folks with journalism experience. This is going to be a FAST turn around on a bigger book, 60,000 words, which is about twice what Fangs, Fur & Mistletoe was. So I’m looking for folks who can read fast and give me their valuable opinion.
What Are Beta Readers and Why Do I Utilize Them?
Beta Reading is an important part of my process. Betas are my first glimpse into what readers will think of a book, how they’ll react to characters, what they find believable or not.
Note: The pickier you are, the better. If you can honestly say you’ve found one of my books to be lacking, all the better. I’m not looking for “yes men” or folks looking for a free read. So if that’s you, head on over to the Free Readspage.
How It Works
Beta Readers receive a chapter at a time, via email. (For this project, I may send a few chapters at a time to keep things speeding along.) Access to and an understanding of Word’s Track Changes is highly appreciated and helps me revise faster. (In fact, I’ve written an article just for you.) I set a pretty brisk pace. Usually a day or two turn around per chapter is what I’m after. If I get enough feedback to consider the book ready for my editor and you’re not finished reading, additional chapters will not be sent.
I generally send Beta readers who make it to the end an exit survey, asking them general questions about the book. Further and more specific requests are sent to selected betas with the chapters.
What’s In It For You?
- A free sneak peak of one of my books.
- The opportunity to help an author craft a book.
- A book with your name in the dedication box.
- My eternal and undying gratitude.
- Soft fuzzy puppies. (Okay, no soft fuzzy puppies, but you saw the part about my eternal gratitude, right?)
So:
If you’re picky about plot and story line…
If you are particular about the characters you love…
If you’re a grammar guru…
If you’re a pacing hound…
If you enjoy giving feedback…
If you like hot, steamy paranormal romance…
If you can read a novella in the next two weeks…
If you like helping authors out…
and you can start reading Wed June 5th…
Send me answers to the following:
- Do you read contemporary romance? If so, which authors?
- Are you an NFL fan? Do you have experience as a journalist? Sports journalist?
- Have you ever beta read for an author?
- What are some of your pet peeves regarding stories/characters?
Past Beta Readers
Beta readers who’ve worked with me in the past are welcome to send a note stating that they have time to read Ask For It. I am, however, using a new email address to keep my inbox tidy. beta@selena-blake.com
Previous Applicants
If you’re available the next few weeks and have applied to beta read for me before, you’re welcome to send me a note with questions 1 & 2 answered. I should have your answers to 3 & 4 in my folder. Thanks!
